This esterification blocks the reactive phenol group of vanillin, which is responsible for the familiar brownish discoloration in alkaline systems such as white soap – Isobutavan thereby remains nearly color-stable and still delivers the full, creamy-sweet vanilla character. This makes it the obvious choice wherever a vanilla note is wanted but the typical vanillin discoloration cannot be tolerated: in white soap, light emulsions, shampoos and conditioners. Note: in strongly alkaline systems (pH above 10, such as household cleaners), the ester can slowly hydrolyze back to vanillin and isobutyric acid – for most cosmetic applications (slightly acidic to neutral systems), however, stability is excellent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eUse in perfumery\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIsobutavan is suited to gourmand compositions, creamy vanilla accords and functional applications such as fine soaps, shower gels and body care, where color stability is decisive. The melting point is 29 °C – close to room temperature.
