1. What is CHOCOVAN™?
CHOCOVAN™ AB 7244C is not a single substance, but a ready-made perfumery mixture (base) by Givaudan. The name suggests a 50/50 character between chocolate and vanilla – the actual composition key in the safety data sheet paints a different picture: vanillin makes up 5–10%, ethylvanillin 1–5%. The predominant part of the mixture – non-declarable components below the GHS reporting threshold – accounts for the actual cocoa architecture, including, according to the technical literature, 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine, which is responsible for the roasted, cocoa-typical facet.
In short: in its composition, CHOCOVAN™ is first and foremost a cocoa base with a pronounced vanilla side mixed in – not the other way around.
2. What does it smell like?
Givaudan's official sensory profile describes CHOCOVAN™ as "gourmand, vanilla-like, sweet." In practice, the impression is closer to opening a tin of drinking cocoa than a bar of chocolate – dry-powdery rather than fatty-dark, with a mild, restrained sweetness. Nothing about it seems bitter or heavily roasted. The vanilla side comes out clearly, but remains subordinate to the cocoa texture.
3. Why you need it at all
First reason: a ready-made, reproducible cocoa accord. A believable chocolate or cocoa effect can only be built up through the careful combination of several individual components – typically pyrazines for the roasted facet, vanillin and ethylvanillin for the sweet side, plus lactones for creaminess. Tuning this combination from scratch yourself is time-consuming and hard to reproduce. CHOCOVAN™ delivers this interplay already calibrated – batch after batch to the same specification window (see chemistry and physics).
Second reason: a more multi-layered vanilla than a single vanillin offers. Pure vanillin or ethylvanillin smells relatively one-dimensional. By being embedded in the cocoa architecture of CHOCOVAN™, the vanilla side seems rounder and more complex – with a powdery-creamy depth that individual vanilla materials cannot create on their own.

5. Dosage and effect
The usual usage range is 0.1% to 5%, with a focus around 0.5%. CHOCOVAN™ is considerably stronger than the first impression on smelling suggests. In practice it is recommended to work with a dilution (e.g. 10% in DPG or ethanol) rather than experimenting with the undiluted material – this allows precise control of the dosage. Even in traces, the material gives other compositions, such as orris accords, a fine powderiness without becoming recognizable as cocoa itself.
6. Practical – dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving
Insoluble in water. As a liquid concentrate, readily miscible with ethanol and common perfumery solvents.
Storage
Store at 10–30 °C (ambient), dry and well ventilated. Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed.
Combining
Partners proven in practice are coffee notes, hazelnut materials (e.g. Filbertone types), lactones for additional creaminess, as well as resins and labdanum types for an oriental direction.
7. Origin – from Quest to Givaudan
CHOCOVAN™ does not originally come from Givaudan itself, but from the portfolio of Quest International, a Dutch-British aroma-materials manufacturer founded in 1905. Quest was acquired by ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) in 1997; Quest's fragrance division was based in Ashford, Kent (Great Britain). In March 2007, Givaudan acquired Quest International in full for around CHF 2.8 billion – one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the aroma-materials industry.
Remarkably: according to the current Certificate of Analysis, CHOCOVAN™ AB 7244C is still manufactured today at Givaudan UK Ltd. in Ashford, Kent – that is, at the very site where Quest Fragrances was once based. Production has thus stayed in the same place over almost two decades, even though the company name has changed.
The existence of materials like CHOCOVAN™ can also be understood against a larger background: natural vanilla – the raw material whose scent facets vanillin and ethylvanillin reproduce – comes to around 80% from Madagascar and is one of the most volatile agricultural commodities of all. Recurring cyclones have repeatedly destroyed large parts of the harvest in recent years, at times driving prices to a level comparable to that of silver and even triggering organized theft in the growing regions – farmers now tattoo their vanilla pods as an anti-theft measure. Synthetic vanilla materials such as those contained in CHOCOVAN™ are a direct answer from the aroma-materials industry to this instability: reproducible, independent of crop failures, available year-round.
8. Safety notes
CHOCOVAN™ AB 7244C is classified under GHS as an eye irritant (Eye Irrit. 2, H319 – causes serious eye irritation), signal word "Warning." When handling the undiluted material, contact with the eyes is therefore particularly avoided; safety goggles are advisable when working openly.
In addition, the safety data sheet points to a contained allergen (EUH208): the material contains 3-methylbutyraldehyde, which can trigger an allergic reaction. The declared components vanillin and ethylvanillin are likewise classified as eye irritants, but have a toxicologically harmless profile (oral LD50 in animals well above 2,000 mg/kg).
The flash point is 116 °C (closed cup, ISO 2719) – the material is among the combustible liquids but is not classified as dangerous goods for transport. Ecologically, water hazard class 2 applies in Germany – do not allow to enter wastewater or water bodies.
On the IFRA status of the individual declared components, we have no clear, up-to-date restriction data that we could transfer with certainty to this specific mixed product. For a binding answer, it is advisable to consult the current IFRA Standards Library or to check directly with Givaudan.
