Isobutavan (CAS 20665-85-4, chemically 4-formyl-2-methoxyphenyl 2-methylpropanoate) is the isobutyrate ester of vanillin. This small structural change – an ester instead of a free phenol group – gives the molecule a standalone texture and its own place in gourmand perfumery, independent of vanillin itself.

A practical recommendation from the perfumer community: the combination with Velvione for a particularly soft, creamy vanilla note – both materials complement each other in their velvety texture and are available from us individually.

A practical note: Isobutavan is occasionally described as intense in concentrated raw-material descriptions. As with most highly concentrated aroma molecules, it is therefore advisable to always form the first impression diluted rather than on the pure material.

Isobutavan was originally developed by Quest International, which was acquired by Givaudan in 2006/2007 – the same corporate background from which the Givco bases and CHOCOVAN™ also come. The idea behind it: vanillin has a free phenolic group that can oxidize in alkaline systems such as white soap and produce brownish discoloration – an effect that many soap makers know from their own experience to this day. By esterifying this group with isobutyric acid, a molecule was created that preserves the vanillic sweetness but remains considerably more color-stable and at the same time brings its own, creamier character.
