Isobutavan – Givaudan
Isobutavan solves a problem every experienced formulator knows: vanillin tends to discolor soaps and light cosmetics an unattractive brown. This base brings all the creamy sweetness of vanilla – only without the discoloration.

Role in the formula
Isobutavan is chemically the isobutyrate ester of vanillin (4-formyl-2-methoxyphenyl 2-methylpropanoate). This esterification blocks the reactive phenol group of vanillin, which is responsible for the familiar brownish discoloration in alkaline systems such as white soap – Isobutavan thereby remains nearly color-stable and still delivers the full, creamy-sweet vanilla character. This makes it the obvious choice wherever a vanilla note is wanted but the typical vanillin discoloration cannot be tolerated: in white soap, light emulsions, shampoos and conditioners. Note: in strongly alkaline systems (pH above 10, such as household cleaners), the ester can slowly hydrolyze back to vanillin and isobutyric acid – for most cosmetic applications (slightly acidic to neutral systems), however, stability is excellent.
Use in perfumery
Isobutavan is suited to gourmand compositions, creamy vanilla accords and functional applications such as fine soaps, shower gels and body care, where color stability is decisive. The usual usage range is up to 2%.
Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving: Soluble in ethanol and common perfumery solvents; at 513 mg/L, comparatively more water-soluble than many other aroma materials in our range.
Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and protected from light. The melting point is 29 °C – close to room temperature. Warm to approx. 40 °C before processing and mix well if the material has solidified.
Combining: Proven in gourmand accords with cocoa and caramel notes as well as in floral compositions that need a creamy base.
Safety information
Isobutavan is not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation – no signal word, no hazard pictograms. It is considered non-skin-irritant, non-eye-irritant and non-sensitizing, with negative results in mutagenicity studies. The flash point is 168 °C – considerably higher than most other materials in our range.
Isobutavan is readily biodegradable (94% degradation within 28 days) and is not classified as a dangerous good for transport. Usual precautions for handling concentrated aroma materials nevertheless apply as always.

FAQ
Why does vanillin discolor but Isobutavan does not?
Vanillin has a free phenolic OH group that oxidizes in alkaline systems such as soap and creates brown discoloration. In Isobutavan, precisely this group is esterified with isobutyric acid and thereby protected.
Is Isobutavan the same as vanillin?
No, chemically it is the isobutyrate ester of vanillin – a molecule in its own right with its own, creamier odor profile and considerably higher color stability.
What is Isobutavan typically used for?
For gourmand accords as well as functional perfumery such as white soaps, shower gels and body-care products, where color stability is important.
