1. What is Velvione?

Velvione (CAS 37609-25-9, 5-cyclohexadecen-1-one) is a macrocyclic musk – a 16-membered carbon ring with one double bond, structurally related to the natural musk compounds civetone and muscone. Commercially it is present as a mixture of its (Z)- and (E)-isomers, usually in a ratio of about 40:60. This isomer mixture is typical for macrocyclic musk molecules of this construction and part of what gives the material its multi-layered character.

Chemically, Velvione is an unsaturated analogue of cyclohexadecanone – that ring molecule which also serves as the starting material for the synthesis. The characteristic nitro-musk facet is otherwise found in the molecule family only in Cosmone, a closely related macrocyclic musk.

2. What does it smell like?

Givaudan's official sensory profile describes Velvione as "musky, metallic, powdery, mild." Characteristic is a slightly animalic nitro-musk facet found in neither other macrocyclic nor polycyclic musk materials – a unique feature that clearly distinguishes Velvione from chemically related molecules such as Globanone (Symrise, a different isomer with a weaker and less animalic effect). The effect is often described as velvety, powdery and skin-close – hence, presumably, the brand name too: a combination of "velvet" and "ketone" (the chemical class to which the molecule belongs).

A practical note from the experience of seasoned users: Velvione is among the larger, low-volatility molecules whose character is barely accessible directly from the bottle – only on the blotter or in dilution does the full impression unfold. Anyone assessing the material for the first time should therefore not smell it neat from the vial, but always test it diluted.

In practice, Velvione is used within a broad dosage window – from homeopathic traces to sole use as the only aroma component:

  • 0.04–0.4%: typical range for most compositions, where Velvione acts as a supporting musk
  • Up to 4%: upper limit for a clearly prominent, powdery-musky character
  • 100%: the exception – see origin further below

Givaudan itself lists Velvione in an official teaching formula for a classic "white musk accord," together with ethylene brassylate, Galaxolide, Thibetolide (Exaltolide) and Ambrettolide. The combination of Velvione and Ambrettolide is expressly described there as a musk-elegant reinforcement of other musk notes – both materials are available from us individually.

A well-known component in niche perfumery

The chemically identical molecule under the name Ambretone (Takasago) makes up, according to specialist retailers, around 8.5% of the formula of Carnal Flower, the 2005 tuberose masterpiece by Dominique Ropion for Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle – one of the most frequently cited reference formulas of contemporary niche perfumery. This illustrates the concentrations at which macrocyclic musk molecules of this kind are actually used in established compositions.

Practical knowledge of experienced users

Perfumers who work extensively with Velvione report a remarkable effect: in certain combinations, Velvione can interact so strongly with other base notes that it partly covers or cancels them out – this effect has been documented, for instance, in interplay with vetiver, where Velvione pushed other base notes into the background. The British aroma commentator Chris Bartlett describes Velvione as "a very fine musk of great diffusion, similar to Ambrettolide but less fruity and even softer," and additionally points out that it can noticeably reinforce and charge other components in the formula without itself appearing dominant.

This reinforcing property presumably also explains why Velviona (see origin) by no means smells one-dimensional despite its 100% concentration: reviews of the fragrance describe highly varied impressions – from fresh mandarin through vanilla to a subtle rhubarb tone – an indication that Velvione interacts strongly with the individual skin chemistry of each wearer and therefore never smells exactly the same.

4. Origin – from patent to cult fragrance

The molecular structure of Velvione was not invented by Givaudan. The origin lies in a US patent granted in 1975 (no. 3,923,699) by Komatsu et al., which describes the compound under the name "Ambretone." Givaudan markets the same molecule under its own brand name Velvione, while Takasago continues to offer it as Ambretone – a pattern common in the aroma-materials industry, in which one and the same chemical compound is available under several brand names of different manufacturers after the original patent term expires.

The material's real fame began decades later, in the fashion world: in 1998, the designer Helmut Lang worked with master perfumer Maurice Roucel to recreate an erotic, skin-close, musky fragrance meant to recall the smell of one's own skin. Roucel relied heavily on Velvione, which ultimately shaped the base of Helmut Lang's Eau de Parfum and Cologne (2000). Roucel himself later called the Eau de Cologne "my musk masterpiece."

In 2001, Lang went a step further: under the name "Velviona" he released a limited edition of 500 pieces – a 4-percent solution of pure Velvione in alcohol and water, without any other aroma material, in a small dark apothecary vial, sold exclusively at the flagship store on Greene Street in SoHo. Velviona is thus regarded, according to consistent sources, as one of the earliest, possibly the very first, commercial perfume built entirely on a single aroma molecule – five years before Geza Schön's "Molecule 01" (2006) turned molecular perfumery into a movement of its own.
