Velvione – Givaudan
Velvione is not a musk that stays quietly in the background. Its powdery-metallic character carries over weeks – and turns a single ingredient almost into a composition in its own right.
Odor character
- Musky, metallic, powdery, mild (official sensory profile)
- A slightly animalic nitro-musk facet – atypical for other macrocyclic musk materials
- Velvety-soft, skin-close effect
- Exceptionally long tenacity on the blotter (over 1 month)
Role in the formula
Velvione is a macrocyclic musk with a nitro-musk facet found neither in other macrocyclic nor in polycyclic musk materials. It lends compositions powdery volume and a velvety musk softness – particularly effective in fine fragrance and in laundry care, where its high substantivity and clean musk character are valued. Givaudan itself lists Velvione in an official teaching formula for a classic "White Musk Accord" together with Ambrettolide – in combination, the two materials reinforce each other and lend the base an elegant musk depth.
Use in perfumery
Velvione is suited to musk accords, powdery base notes, fine fragrance and functional applications such as laundry care and fine detergents. The usual usage range is 0.2% to 4%.
Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving: Practically insoluble in water (0.65 mg/L), with a Log Pow of 5.9 readily soluble in fatty and alcoholic carriers.
Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated, protected from light. Velvione can crystallize at room temperature (melting point 21 °C) – warm to approx. 40 °C before processing and mix well.
Combining: The combination with Ambrettolide has proven effective, creating a musk-elegant effect and reinforcing other musk notes. Velvione also combines well with ethylene brassylate and Romandolide types.
Safety information
Velvione is classified under GHS as hazardous to water (Aquatic Acute 1 and Aquatic Chronic 1, H400/H410 – very toxic to aquatic life, also with long-lasting effects), signal word "Warning." Unlike many other aroma molecules, there is no classification here for skin or eye irritation or sensitization – the safety profile is correspondingly unremarkable.
A positive point: Velvione is readily biodegradable (86% degradation within 28 days) – an above-average value. The flash point is 162 °C, considerably higher than most other materials in our range – the material is among the less easily flammable liquids.

FAQ
Is Velvione a natural material?
No, it is a synthetic molecule by Givaudan from the class of macrocyclic musk compounds.
Why does Velvione sometimes crystallize?
Its melting point is 21 °C, close to usual room temperature. In cooler storage the material can solidify – simply warm to approx. 40 °C and mix well, then it is liquid again.
What dosage should be used?
The usual usage range is between 0.2% and 4%, depending on the desired intensity and type of composition.
What does Velvione combine well with?
The combination with Ambrettolide has proven effective for a musk-elegant effect, as well as with ethylene brassylate and Romandolide types.
