THE 71795 SA – Black Tea Fragrance Base by Firmenich

THE 71795 SA is a perfumery base by Firmenich (today dsm-firmenich) with the scent of strongly brewed black tea. “Thé” is the French word for tea. It is a composed black tea accord, not a tea extract: the tea impression is built from fruity esters and ionones, rounded off by a sweetness reminiscent of dried fruit. As the base is a mixture, it has no CAS number of its own.

Odour profile

  • Freshly brewed black tea: bitter-sweet, warm, slightly tannic
  • Underneath, a soft sweetness reminiscent of dried fruit
  • Odour family: tea, with dry, spicy leafy depth
  • Note position: heart note
  • Tenacity on blotter: approx. 120 hours
  • Colourless to pale yellow, clear liquid

Composition according to the manufacturer's data

According to the manufacturer's data (Firmenich), the base consists mainly of:

  • 1,1-Dimethyl-2-phenylethyl butyrate – CAS 10094-34-5, EC 233-221-8, 70–80 %
  • 2-Phenylethyl acetate – CAS 103-45-7, EC 203-113-5, 15–20 %
  • Methyl alpha-ionone – CAS 127-42-4, EC 204-842-1, 2.5–5 %
  • (E)-1-(2,6,6-Trimethyl-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)pent-1-en-3-one – CAS 63429-28-7, EC 264-140-6, 0.5–1 %
  • Alpha-iso-methyl ionone – CAS 127-51-5, EC 204-846-3, 0.1–0.5 %

The fruity esters and the ionones explain the dried-fruit sweetness and the floral, tea-like impression of the base.

Use in perfumery

  • Recommended dosage: up to 5 % in the perfume concentrate
  • For all kinds of tea accords: pure black tea, milk oolong with lactones, tea with osmanthus, ginger, lemon, honey or dark dried fruit

Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining

Dissolving: Liquid and ready to use, insoluble in water. For formula work a 10 % dilution in ethanol or DPG is practical.

Storing: Dry, in unopened containers, ideally at 11–25 °C (manufacturer’s data). Shelf life according to the manufacturer: 12 months.

Combining: Osmanthus brings out the apricot-like, leathery side of a classic osmanthus tea. Lactones turn it into a milky oolong, ginger and lemon into a bright, spicy tea, honey or dark dried fruit into a dark, warming version. From our range, Green Tea Givco 228 pairs well for a green-and-black tea accord.

FAQ

What is THE 71795 SA?
A ready-made black tea fragrance base by Firmenich: a strong tea infusion with the sweetness of dried fruit.

Is it real black tea?
No. THE 71795 SA is a composed black tea accord, not an extract of tea leaves. The tea scent is built from fruity esters and ionones, with a dried-fruit sweetness that pure tea would not have.

Why does the base have no CAS number?
It is a mixture of several substances. The CAS numbers of the components are listed above under Composition.

How do I dose THE 71795 SA?
Up to 5 % in the perfume concentrate. Best start with a dilution and build the accord step by step.

How can a tea accord be built?
With osmanthus for an osmanthus tea, with lactones for a milky oolong, with ginger, lemon, honey or dark dried fruit for other variations.

Is THE 71795 SA hazardous?
It can cause serious eye damage (H318) and is toxic to aquatic life (H411). Wear goggles and gloves, never pour residues down the drain.
