There are notes everyone knows – and there is labdanum: the resin that has stood behind the word “amber” for millennia, though few have heard its name. This page explains what labdanum is, where it comes from, why it smells the way it does, and how it connects to modern synthetic Ambroxan materials.
What is labdanum?
Labdanum is the sticky resin of the rockrose (Cistus ladaniferus), a low Mediterranean shrub with white, often blotched flowers. In heat, its leaves and stems exude a dark, aromatic resin – a defence against drought and insects. This resin, not the flower, carries the warm, leathery-resinous scent perfumers have long called “plant-based amber”.
Goats, shepherds and the ladanisterion
Its harvesting is among the strangest in the history of perfumery. Goats and sheep grazed in the rockrose scrub, and the sticky resin clung to the hair of their beards and legs. Shepherds then combed it out with a special tool. Herodotus described it in his Histories (5th century BCE) with an eyewitness's wonder: the goats of Crete and Cyprus roam the bushes, and the resin sticks to the long hair of their chins.
Later came the ladanisterion – rake-like, but with leather thongs instead of tines: it was used to comb the shrubs directly, and the resin stayed on the leather. The tool has barely changed over centuries.
Ancient uses
Labdanum is one of the oldest aroma materials of all. Egyptian texts mention it; Egyptians and Carthaginians used it as incense, as a body ointment and as medicine. Some scholars identify the biblical “lot” (among the goods carried by the Ishmaelites) with labdanum. And there is a persistent legend linking the resin to the ceremonial “beard” of the pharaohs – an echo of that “goat” harvest.
Three “ambers” not to be confused
The word “amber” is confusing in perfumery. It is really three different things:
- Perfumery “amber” – not a material but an accord whose historical base is labdanum. Warm, resinous, sweetish-balsamic.
- Grey amber (ambergris) – a secretion from the digestive tract of the sperm whale. Of animal origin.
- Fossil amber – petrified conifer resin. It smells only when heated and is practically unused as a perfumery raw material.
Labdanum was historically the affordable way to achieve an “amber” effect without rare, expensive ambergris.
Chemistry: labdane diterpenes and the kinship with Ambroxan
Here lies the most elegant connection. Labdanum is built on labdane diterpenes (labdanolic acid and related compounds) – an entire class of substances is named after labdanum.
The same labdane skeleton is found in sclareol from clary sage, from which Ambrox / Ambroxan is produced industrially. Chemically, Ambroxan is a “tetranorlabdane”: a labdane skeleton missing four terminal carbon atoms. In other words, the modern synthetic amber materials – Ambrofix™, Ambermor® – are chemical descendants of the very skeleton that gave natural labdanum its name. What does labdanum smell like?
Warm, resinous, balsamic, with a leathery-animalic depth and a “grey-amber” tone. Within it are honey, dried fruit (plum, raisin) and smoky, incense-like facets. A classic base material: it lasts long, pulls a composition down and deep, and acts as a fixative.
Role in perfumery: two classic accords
Labdanum anchors two families at once:
- Amber accord. The historical “ambre” triad: labdanum + benzoin + vanilla. Labdanum provides the resinous-leathery backbone.
- Chypre accord. The classic chypre was built on the trio bergamot + labdanum + oakmoss. Labdanum holds the warm, suede-like base.

Production today – and why 20% in TEC
The resin is obtained by boiling the plant material and skimming off the resin; from this come the resinoid, concrète and absolute. The pure absolute is very dark and thick and hard to dose accurately. That is why we offer a ready-to-use form – Labdanum Absolute 20% in TEC: diluted in triethyl citrate, the material becomes reproducible and convenient.
IFRA and allergens
Labdanum is not prohibited (current IFRA Standards) but is subject to concentration limits in some categories because of naturally occurring allergens (cinnamic alcohol, eugenol, benzyl alcohol and other phenolic constituents) and resin acids. As a natural product it is less consistent from batch to batch – that is normal. Many fragrances combine “natural labdanum + synthetics” to balance longevity, cost and regulation.

FAQ
Are labdanum and frankincense the same?
No. Labdanum is the resin of the rockrose (Cistus). Frankincense (olibanum) comes from the Boswellia tree. Similar association, different materials.
Is labdanum the same as amber?
It is the plant-based source of the “amber” character. Grey amber (ambergris) is of animal origin; labdanum has historically replaced it.
Why 20% in TEC instead of neat?
The pure absolute is dark, thick and hard to dose. Dissolved in TEC it incorporates accurately and easily.
How is labdanum connected to Ambroxan?
Through the labdane skeleton: Ambroxan is a “tetranorlabdane”, a chemical relative of the labdanum compounds.
