Black Agar Givco 215/2 does not build a woody accord – it delivers the finished image of burning agarwood. Smoky, resinous, amber-warm, with a depth that can otherwise only be assembled laboriously from many individual materials.

Role in the formula

Black Agar Givco 215/2 is a ready-made oud reconstruction base by Givaudan – not a single substance, but a complex blend of over 20 components. Two of them may already be familiar to our customers: by far the largest component is Oxyoctaline Formate (10–20%), complemented by Ebanol™ (1–2.5%) – both also available individually in our range. Around these two core materials, Givaudan composes a complete, self-consistent agarwood accord with other well-known aroma materials such as Vertofix (methyl cedryl ketone), beta-ionone and real elemi oil, ready to use as a base – instead of rebuilding it yourself from dozens of individual materials.

Use in perfumery

Black Agar Givco 215/2 is suited to oriental compositions, contemporary chypres, woody-ambered accords and classic oud interpretations. It works across the entire scent development – from top to base note – and is particularly effective in men's fragrances and in incense (agarbatti).

Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining

Dissolving: Practically insoluble in water. As a liquid concentrate, readily miscible with ethanol and common perfumery solvents.

Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated. Protect from light. Keep containers tightly closed.

Combining: Blends well with patchouli, amyris, cedarwood, labdanum, frankincense and guaiac wood – the natural materials that are also part of the base's own recipe.

Safety information

Black Agar Givco 215/2 is classified under GHS as skin-sensitizing and hazardous to water (Skin Sens. 1, H317 – may cause an allergic skin reaction; Aquatic Acute 1 and Aquatic Chronic 1, H400/H410 – very toxic to aquatic life, also with long-lasting effects), signal word "Warning." In Germany this corresponds to water hazard class 3 (highly hazardous to water) – classified somewhat more strictly than most other materials in our range.

Acute toxicity is in the harmless range (oral toxicity estimate above 2,000 mg/kg). Skin and eye irritation are possible; usual precautions for handling concentrated aroma materials apply as always – gloves and eye protection when working with it open.

As a complex blend of over 20 components, Black Agar Givco 215/2 contains several declarable fragrance substances, including isoeugenol, benzyl alcohol and cinnamyl benzoate – relevant for EU allergen labeling in finished products. The flash point is 104 °C.

No, it is a synthetic-natural reconstruction by Givaudan that recreates the character of real, rare agarwood – without its extreme cost and availability problems.

What does Black Agar have to do with Oxyoctaline Formate and Ebanol™?
Both are core components of the base: Oxyoctaline Formate makes up the largest share at 10–20%, Ebanol™ is contained at 1–2.5%. Anyone already familiar with both materials receives, with Black Agar, a ready-composed evolution of their interplay.
