Build Your Own Oud: Black Agar, Oxyoctaline, Ebanol & Labdanum

Oud is the most expensive raw material in perfumery – and almost never what the bottle claims. The vast majority of “oud” fragrances work with a reconstruction of synthetic molecules. This page shows how a convincing oud accord is built, and introduces the four building blocks from our range: Black Agar Givco 215/2, Oxyoctaline Formate, Ebanol and Labdanum.

Why synthetic?

Oud is the resin an agarwood tree (Aquilaria) forms in response to a mould infection. Only a fraction of trees develop it at all, and every Aquilaria species is protected under CITES. Natural oud costs, depending on quality, several thousand to tens of thousands of euros per kilo – top grades far more. A kilo of high-grade chips often yields only one or two millilitres of oil.

That is why “oud” in perfumery is almost always a reconstruction: synthetic molecules that trace the direction of the real material – smoky, woody, leathery, animalic – at a fraction of the cost and without the sustainability problem. The following building blocks are made exactly for that.

The four building blocks in detail

Black Agar Givco 215/2 – the core

Black Agar is Givaudan’s ready-made oud base – the smoky-woody, leathery-animalic centre of the accord. It delivers the characteristic “oud” impression in one stroke, the foundation everything else builds on. More in the Black Agar reference and in the story KŎdō & Black Agar.

Oxyoctaline Formate – the woody-amber bridge

Oxyoctaline Formate is the quiet main ingredient behind many oud bases – a woody-ambery molecule that gives the accord surface, dryness and cohesion without stepping forward itself. It links the smoky top to the warmer base. More in the Oxyoctaline reference.

Ebanol – the creamy wood body

Ebanol brings a powerful, sandalwood-like creaminess and rounds Black Agar’s edges. It takes the harshness off the reconstruction and gives it a full, skin-close wood body. More in the Ebanol reference.

Labdanum – leathery-resinous depth

Labdanum is oud’s classic partner: a leathery-resinous, ambered depth with a slightly animalic pull. Exactly this combination defines modern oud classics such as Dior Oud Ispahan. Labdanum makes the reconstruction denser, darker and more “real”. We supply it as a 20% solution in TEC – easy to dose. More in the Labdanum reference.

How to build an oud accord

A solid oud accord layers from the smoky top down to the leathery depth:

  • Core – Black Agar as the smoky-animalic oud signature.
  • Surface – Oxyoctaline Formate for dry, woody-ambery connection.
  • Body – Ebanol for creamy sandalwood fullness.
  • Depth – Labdanum for leathery-resinous, ambered darkness.

From there you refine to taste: ISO E Super opens and boosts diffusion, Cashmeran adds spicy-radiant warmth, a tiny touch of smoke (guaiac wood or birch tar) sharpens the top. Important: Black Agar and Labdanum are strong, Ebanol very potent – work in dilution and approach in small steps.

Common mistakes

  • Only Black Agar – alone the accord stays flat. Only surface, body and depth make it credible.
  • Too much smoke – guaiac/birch tar overdosed quickly turns ashy. Tiny amounts.
  • No dilution – with such strong materials, work in a 10% solution.
