Cashmeran® is no ordinary musk.
It doesn't smell of laundry. Not of clean white. It smells of skin, warmth and fabric – of something you can't name immediately but recognize at once.
Cashmeran® (Musk Indanone, CAS 33704-61-9) by IFF is among the most characterful musk raw materials in perfumery. Warm, woody, slightly spicy – a few drops change a composition.
This product is a ready-to-use 50% solution in DPG (dipropylene glycol) – ideal for direct use in fragrance formulas without additional dissolving.
Odor character
Cashmeran® is perceived as:
- warm, soft musk
- woody-spicy depth
- velvety, textile quality
- slightly floral nuances
- dry warmth in the drydown
- a long, even drydown
Cashmeran feels darker and more physical than polycyclic musk types such as Galaxolide – closer to an oriental accord than to a white-musk effect.
In combination with Ambroxan and ISO E Super, a woody-musk accord of deep complexity emerges.
Use in perfumery
Cashmeran works both as a main accord and as a fixative. At low dosages it lends warmth and depth without standing out. At higher dosages it shapes the composition with an unmistakable cashmere-musk character.
Typical applications: warm musk and cashmere accords, oriental and woody-oriental bases, skin-scent effects with warmth and body, and as a fixative in heart and base accords. It combines well with other musk types and lends compositions additional depth and volume.
Why 50% in DPG?
Pure Cashmeran sits at the boundary between liquid and solid at room temperature (melting point approx. 27 °C). Depending on the ambient temperature it is semi-solid, viscous or slightly crystalline – it can hardly be weighed cleanly and reproducibly out of the original container.
Since the IFRA limit for fine fragrance is 3.8% in the finished product, precise dosing is especially important for Cashmeran – a material that can only be measured imprecisely makes correct compliance with this limit difficult in practice.
The 50% solution in DPG solves both problems at once: it is consistently liquid at room temperature and can be measured precisely, and the dilution factor is known and constant – 1 g of the solution corresponds to 0.5 g of pure Cashmeran. This makes dosages traceable and formulas reproducible from trial to trial.
Regulatory note
Cashmeran® (CAS 33704-61-9) has been subject to quantity restrictions since IFRA Amendment 49 (2020), confirmed in Amendment 51 (2023). The permitted maximum concentration in the finished product varies widely by application category – from very low values for lip products to significantly higher values for products without skin contact. For fine fragrance a limit of 3.8% applies.
Under the CLP Regulation, Cashmeran® is classified with the hazard statements H315 (causes skin irritation), H319 (causes serious eye irritation) and H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction). Environmentally, H411 applies (toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). Cashmeran does not meet the PBT criteria under REACH; the bioaccumulation factor is well below that of classic polycyclic musk compounds.

What is Cashmeran?
Cashmeran® (Musk Indanone, CAS 33704-61-9) is a synthetic musk material by IFF with a warm, woody-spicy character. The name derives from cashmere fabric – an association with warmth and textile rather than with classic "laundry musk."
Is Cashmeran a polycyclic musk?
Not in the strict sense. Cashmeran has the molecular formula C₁₄H₂₂O and differs structurally from classic polycyclic musk compounds such as Galaxolide (C₁₈H₂₆O). It is nonetheless often placed in the same category, as it performs similar functions in a formula.
Why is Cashmeran only available as a 50% solution?
Pure Cashmeran sits at the boundary between liquid and solid at room temperature and is hard to dose precisely. The 50% solution in DPG is consistently liquid, precisely measurable and has a known dilution factor – important, since the IFRA limit for fine fragrance is only 3.8%.
