Buy Ambroxan – one molecule, four manufacturers

Ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5) is the dry, woody amber molecule that several manufacturers offer under their own trade names. The molecule is the same in all versions; what differs is the production route and the origin of the carbon.

Which version for whom?

Ambrox® Super (dsm-firmenich) Biotechnological, pure (−)-enantiomer, 100% renewable carbon, readily biodegradable. For those who want the original from the company that elucidated the structure of Ambrox.
Ambrofix™ (Givaudan) Biotechnological from sugarcane, 100% renewable carbon. For those who value sustainability and batch-to-batch consistency.
Ambermor® (IFF) Synthetic, white crystals. The familiar reference, proven in many formulas.
Ambroxide Cryst. (Symrise) White crystals, 100% renewable carbon. According to Symrise, a clean, substantive amber note and key material for amber compositions.

All four are suitable as a base note and fixative.

Note: Cetalor (CAS 3738-00-9) belongs to the same odour family but is a different molecule with a creamier, more musky profile.

Frequently asked questions

Are the four versions interchangeable?

Chemically they are the same molecule (CAS 6790-58-5). Differences come from the production route; Ambrox® Super is specified as the pure (−)-enantiomer. If you are switching a formula, compare the versions side by side on a blotter.

In what form is Ambroxan supplied?

Ambroxan is solid at room temperature and is filled by weight. For a composition it is dissolved first – which solvent suits is explained in the article Fixative or solvent?
