Ambrofix vs Ambroxan: all four versions compared

Ambrofix vs Ambroxan: Ambermor, Ambrox Super, Ambroxide and Ambrofix compared

Ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5) is the dry, woody amber molecule that several manufacturers offer under their own trade names. The molecule is the same in all versions; what differs is the manufacturer, the production route, the form – and the price.

This page sets the four versions available at Labor am Meer side by side in one table: manufacturer, form, CAS, price from 10 g, largest pack size, odour character as stated on the product page and IFRA status. For chemistry and history, see the article Ambroxan: all versions compared; to order, see the collection Buy Ambroxan – all versions.

The four versions side by side

Product Manufacturer Form CAS Price from (10 g) Sizes up to Odour character (per product page) IFRA / CLP
Ambermor® IFF White crystalline powder, synthetic 6790-58-5 €22 500 g (€565) Dry woody amber, warm mineral facets, a light sweetness in the heart No quantitative IFRA restriction for CAS 6790-58-5; not classified as hazardous per manufacturer (CLP)
Ambrox® Super dsm-firmenich Crystalline powder, white biotechnology 6790-58-5 ((−)-enantiomer) €24 250 g (€330) Extremely powerful and elegant, ambery with a musky, woody tonality; about 1 month on the blotter No IFRA Standard; not classified as hazardous per manufacturer (CLP)
Ambroxide Cryst. Symrise Off-white to white crystals, from sclareol 6790-58-5 €33 500 g (€750) Clean, substantive amber note; descriptors Ambery, Amber, Wood No IFRA Standard; not classified as hazardous (CLP)
Ambrofix™ Givaudan White to off-white powder, biotech from sugarcane 6790-58-5 / 3738-00-9 €38 500 g (€755) Dry woody amber, clear ambery radiance, dry tobacco nuances; 1 month on the blotter No quantitative IFRA restriction for CAS 6790-58-5; not classified as hazardous (CLP)

All four versions work as a base note and fixative. The product page and the labelling on the container are authoritative in each case.

Which one is right for you?

  • Ambermor® (IFF) – the affordable entry point: from €22 for 10 g and available up to 500 g. The familiar reference for anyone using Ambroxan regularly or in larger quantities.
  • Ambrox® Super (dsm-firmenich) – the pure (−)-enantiomer from white biotechnology, made by the house that elucidated the structure of Ambrox. The premium choice when enantiomeric purity and origin matter.
  • Ambroxide Cryst. (Symrise) – Symrise’s Ambroxan from Holzminden: crystals of at least 99% purity with 100% renewable carbon, positioned by the manufacturer as a lead substance for amber compositions.
  • Ambrofix™ (Givaudan) – the Givaudan original, biotech from sugarcane with 100% renewable carbon. For anyone who wants exactly this material in their formula.

If you are switching a formula, compare the versions side by side on a blotter – chemically it is the same molecule; differences come from the production route.

Ready to use: 10 % solutions in DPG

Ambroxan is solid at room temperature and has to be dissolved before compounding. If you would rather skip weighing and dissolving, Ambroxan is also available as a 10 % solution in DPG from €18 – for example Ambermor 10 % in DPG. All pre-diluted materials: Ready-to-use solutions.

Frequently asked questions

Ambrofix vs Ambroxan – what is the difference?

Ambroxan is the common name for the molecule with CAS number 6790-58-5. Ambrofix™ is Givaudan’s trade name for its version made by biotechnology from sugarcane, with 100% renewable carbon. Ambermor® (IFF), Ambrox® Super (dsm-firmenich) and Ambroxide Cryst. (Symrise) are further trade names for the same molecule.

Are the four versions interchangeable?

Chemically they are the same molecule (CAS 6790-58-5). Differences come from the production route; Ambrox® Super is specified as the pure (−)-enantiomer. If you are switching a formula, compare the versions side by side on a blotter.

Which Ambroxan version is the most affordable?

Ambermor® by IFF: from €22 for 10 g, available up to 500 g. Ambrox® Super starts at €24, Ambroxide Cryst. at €33, Ambrofix™ at €38 (10 g each). As a 10 % solution in DPG, Ambroxan is available from €18.

Are there IFRA restrictions for Ambroxan?

No. Ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5) is not subject to quantitative IFRA restrictions; for Ambrox® Super and Ambroxide Cryst. the product pages state explicitly that no IFRA Standard exists. According to the manufacturers’ data, all four versions are not classified as hazardous.
