Ambrofix vs Ambroxan – what is the difference?
They are the same molecule. Ambroxan is the generic name for CAS 6790-58-5. Ambrofix™ is Givaudan's trade name for the version made biotechnologically from sugarcane; Ambermor® is IFF's name for it; Ambrox® is the original Firmenich line; Ambroxide cryst. is Symrise's.
What actually differs between them is the manufacturing route, the share of the olfactorily active (−)-enantiomer, the overall purity and the sustainability balance – not the base molecule. 1. The origin – floating gold
Before there was Ambroxan, there was ambergris – and ambergris was one of the strangest and most coveted materials in human history.
Ambergris forms in the digestive tract of the sperm whale – presumably as a reaction to indigestible squid beaks. The whale releases the mass, it drifts in the sea for years, is transformed by sun, salt water and time, and in the process develops a scent unlike any other: warm, mineral, salty, dry, somehow alive.
Perfumers called it floating gold. Rare. Expensive. Irreplaceable – until chemists proved that it was replaceable after all.
For centuries, ambergris was the reason great perfumes lasted so long and felt so deep. It had a property no other material could reproduce: it made other aroma materials richer, deeper, more alive – without itself stepping into the foreground.
Then chemists made it obsolete.
2. The synthesis – 70 years of research
In 1950, Firmenich patented a method for synthesizing ambroxide from sclareolide – a substance derived from sclareol, the diterpene of clary sage (Salvia sclarea). That was the beginning.
But the story has a twist that almost no one knows: the molecule was synthesized in 1950 and immediately used in perfumery – even though no one knew whether it actually occurred in ambergris.
Only in 1977 – 27 years later – did IFF chemists prove through chromatographic analyses that Ambroxan is indeed the main active component of natural ambergris. The right molecule had been synthesized without anyone knowing it was the right one.
The most important milestones:
- 1950 – Firmenich synthesizes ambroxide from sclareol. First commercial use as Ambrox®
- 1970s – Henkel registers Ambroxan for functional perfumery. Beginning of the mass market
- 1977 – IFF chemists prove: Ambroxan is the key active component in natural ambergris
- 1988 – Firmenich develops a fully synthetic route without sage oil. Ambrox DL (racemic mixture)
- 1993 – Firmenich introduces Cetalox® – the racemic version with a creamy, musky profile
- 2009 – Givaudan develops a biotechnological process from sugarcane
- 2014 – dsm-Firmenich launches Ambrox® Super – improved version
- 2021 – Givaudan introduces Ambrofix™ commercially – 100% renewable carbon
3. What does Ambroxan smell like?
This is the hardest question to answer – because Ambroxan is perceived completely differently depending on concentration, carrier and skin chemistry.
On the blotter: dry, woody, slightly mineral, a kind of dry warmth. To some it smells of old wood, to others of warm skin, to still others of a breath of salty sea air.
On the skin, the real phenomenon unfolds. Ambroxan reacts with body heat and individual skin chemistry – it smells different on every person. That is not a flaw of the molecule. It is its design principle.
Ambroxan is perceived as:

- subtle skin warmth
- clean clarity
- transparent depth
- a long-lasting, skin-close drydown
Geza Schön – the perfumer behind Escentric Molecules – described Ambroxan as a molecule that unites opposing facets: mineral and clear, yet at the same time warm and animalic. A radiating power that hardly any other raw material achieves.
4. Why does Ambroxan behave so differently?
Ambroxan is not an ordinary fixative. It is an amplifier.
At low dosages it makes other aroma materials richer, deeper, more present – without being perceived as a standalone note itself. A woody accord becomes woodier. A musk becomes more skin-close. A composition feels more complete.
At higher dosages, Ambroxan itself steps into the foreground with a characteristic dry, warm amber signature that – unlike sweetish amber accords – feels clear and unmistakable.
The physical reasons for its persistence:
- Low vapor pressure – evaporates extremely slowly
- High molecular weight (236.4 g/mol) – stays longer on surfaces
- High Log Pow – strong affinity for skin and fibers
- Chiral (−)-enantiomer – the olfactorily active form with maximum receptor binding
On the blotter, Ambrofix™ remains perceptible for one month at dosages from traces to 2% – a figure from Givaudan's official material data.
5. Ambroxan in perfumery today
Ambroxan is found today in roughly 60% of all fine fragrances launched after 2010. No other synthetic aroma material has achieved comparable market penetration in this period.
The reasons:
- It works in practically every fragrance family – from aquatic to oriental
- It amplifies other materials without changing their character
- It gives compositions transparency and depth
- It is fixative and character molecule in one
Well-known perfumes with a high Ambroxan content:

7. How do they differ?
Ambroxan is a chiral molecule – it has an asymmetric carbon atom and exists in two mirror-image forms (enantiomers). Only the (−)-enantiomer is strongly olfactorily active.
Depending on the synthesis route, the following vary:
- Enantiomer ratio – how much active (−)-enantiomer is present
- Overall purity – how much Ambroxan relative to by-products
- Starting material – sclareol, sugarcane or fully synthetic
- Sustainability – renewable carbon yes/no, biodegradability
Ambrofix™ – biotechnological from sugarcane, 100% renewable carbon, controlled optical purity. Readily biodegradable (71% after 28 days, OECD 301F).
Ambermor® – synthetic, purity >99% (GC). Classic, dry ambroxide profile.
Ambrox® Super – Firmenich version since 2014 with a higher proportion of the active enantiomer. The forefather of the family, further developed.

In practice, the differences in the scent profile are often subtle. What really distinguishes the versions is the manufacturing process and the sustainability balance.
8. Which version for which purpose?
There is no universally best version – the choice depends on the context:
- Sustainability in focus – Ambrofix™: 100% renewable carbon, biotechnological, readily biodegradable
- High purity, classic profile – Ambermor® IFF: >99% GC purity
- Traditional Firmenich line – Ambrox® Super: the forefather, further developed
- Comparative formulation – test several versions side by side
Typical dosages (apply to all versions):
- 0.05–0.3% – invisible fixation, drydown deepening
- 0.3–1% – subtle amber depth, improved projection
- 1–2% – clear Ambroxan signature

9. Ambroxan vs Cetalox – what is the difference?
Cetalox® (CAS 3738-00-9) and Ambroxan (CAS 6790-58-5) are not the same.
Ambroxan is the (−)-enantiomer – dry, woody, mineral. Cetalox is a racemic mixture – creamier, softer, more musk-nuanced. Some niche perfumers prefer Cetalox for its warmer, less technical character.
Practical tip: 4:1 Ambroxan to Cetalox gives a balanced cashmere-amber accord.
Firmenich introduced Cetalox in 1993 – 43 years after Ambrox. Not a copy, but a deliberate further development with a different character.
10. The anosmia phenomenon
About 20% of people perceive Ambroxan only weakly or not at all – genetically determined, depending on the expression of specific olfactory receptors.
This explains a well-known phenomenon: people wear Dior Sauvage and wonder why everyone else reacts so enthusiastically while they themselves barely perceive anything. The answer is often: partial anosmia to Ambroxan.
The molecule still works in the formula – other people perceive it clearly.
