Ebanol™ – Givaudan
Ebanol™ is not a creamy-soft sandalwood. Its effect is closer to the grain than to the sweetness – drier, more concentrated, with a presence that stretches over weeks instead of fading after hours.

Role in the formula
With a tenacity of about three weeks on the blotter, Ebanol™ is among the longest-lasting base materials of all – considerably longer than most other wood molecules. According to the manufacturer it is highly substantive on all carriers and brings volume as well as a diffusive sandalwood effect into compositions. In practice it is used both as a standalone sandalwood core and as a modifier that supports the depth, diffusion and fixation of other materials in the formula without dominating the foreground itself.
Use in perfumery
Ebanol™ is suited to sandalwood accords, woody base notes, woody and woody-amber compositions and musk-wood structures. The usual usage range is 0.5% to 5%. Even small amounts noticeably influence the character of a woody accord – the sandalwood appears more clearly defined and remains recognizable for longer.
A particular advantage in practical use: Ebanol™ retains its effect even in demanding, strongly alkaline bases (see combining), where many other materials weaken.
Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving: Practically insoluble in water (34.1 mg/L at 20 °C), with a Log Pow of 4.2 readily soluble in fatty and alcoholic carriers. Comparatively viscous (92.1 mm²/s).
Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated. Protect from light. Keep containers tightly closed.
Combining: Blends well with woody accords, amber materials, musk notes and warm base structures. According to the manufacturer, it shows very good stability in most application bases tested – from fabric softeners and shampoos to soaps and liquid detergents.
Safety information
Ebanol™ is classified under GHS as hazardous to water (Aquatic Chronic 2, H411 – toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). In Germany this corresponds to water hazard class 2. Accordingly: do not allow to enter wastewater, waterways or soil.
For acute toxicity, the values are in the harmless range: the oral LD50 in the rat is above 5,000 mg/kg, the dermal LD50 above 2,000 mg/kg. In skin tests on the rabbit, no skin irritation was seen, likewise no eye irritation (tested on rabbits and humans). In sensitization tests in humans (HRIPT) and in animals, no sensitizing potential was found. Phototoxicity and genotoxicity (Ames test, chromosome aberration test) also tested negative.
A positive point: according to test data, Ebanol™ is readily biodegradable (66% degradation within 28 days, OECD 301F) – a difference from some other aroma molecules in this price class. The flash point is 108 °C (Pensky-Martens, closed cup) – the material is a flammable liquid.
