Sandalore™ – Givaudan

Sandalore™ does not impose itself. Its sandalwood is warm, sweet and supple rather than sharp – a material that fits into a composition instead of dominating it.

Role in the formula

With a tenacity of about three weeks on the blotter, Sandalore™ is among the longest-lasting base materials in perfumery. According to the manufacturer it is highly substantive – both wet and dry – and brings volume and diffusion into compositions. Givaudan itself describes it as an interesting sandalwood material in combination with Ebanol™ – the two materials occupy different facets of the same theme: Sandalore™ the warm, sweet side, Ebanol™ the more powerful, musky one.

Use in perfumery

Sandalore™ is suited to sandalwood accords, woody base notes, skin-scent compositions and amber and musk accords. The usual usage range is 0.5% to 10% – a wider window than most other sandalwood materials.

Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining

Dissolving: Practically insoluble in water (15 mg/L at 20 °C), with a Log Pow of 4.7 readily soluble in fatty and alcoholic carriers. Distinctly viscous (197 mm²/s).

Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated. Protect from light. Keep containers tightly closed.

Combining: According to the manufacturer, it shows very good stability in most application bases tested – from fabric softeners and antiperspirants to shampoos and soaps.

Safety information

According to the current safety data sheet from Givaudan Suisse SA (version 10.0, 26 Sep 2023), Sandalore™ is classified under GHS as eye-irritant and hazardous to water (Eye Irrit. 2, H319 – causes serious eye irritation; Aquatic Chronic 2, H411 – toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects), signal word "Warning." In Germany this corresponds to water hazard class 2.

For acute toxicity, the values are in the harmless range: the oral LD50 in the rat is above 6,750 mg/kg. In skin tests, species-dependent no-to-mild irritation potential was seen (no irritation in the guinea pig, mild irritation in the rabbit); eye irritation is the basis of the H319 classification. In sensitization tests in humans (HRIPT) and in animals, no sensitizing potential was found. Genotoxicity (Ames test, chromosome aberration test) also tested consistently negative. Not a PBT or vPvB substance, not assessed as an endocrine disruptor.

A positive point: Sandalore™ is readily biodegradable (78% degradation within 28 days, OECD 301F) and additionally inherently biodegradable (75% within 35 days, OECD 302C). The flash point is 95 °C (Pensky-Martens, closed cup), the auto-ignition temperature 250 °C (DIN 51794) – the material is a flammable liquid. For transport: UN 3082, Class 9, Packing Group III, classified as a marine pollutant.
