Calone (Watermelon Ketone)

Calone brings a juicy-marine freshness into a formula that recalls both watermelon and sea air at once – one of the most defining discoveries in 20th-century fragrance history, originally created in the course of entirely different pharmaceutical research.

Odor character

  • Salty-marine, with a delicate fruity-melon facet
  • Solid at room temperature, with a comparatively low melting point (37–41 °C)
  • Soluble in ethanol, practically insoluble in water

Role in the formula

Calone is considered one of the most defining materials of the so-called "ozonic" or aquatic fragrance direction, which from the 1990s onward influenced large parts of the perfumery novelties of that time. In compositions the material is used to build marine, airy freshness facets, often in combination with other fresh or green materials.

Use in perfumery

The manufacturer gives no specific dosage recommendation for this material in the available documentation. As with any new aroma material, it is advisable to start with small amounts in diluted form and increase gradually according to your own scent impression.

Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining

Dissolving: Calone is practically insoluble in water but readily soluble in ethanol (1 g in 5 mL ethanol 95%).

Storing: Store in tightly closed, preferably full containers, cool, dry and well-ventilated, protected from light. Keep away from ignition sources.

Note on consistency: With a melting point of 37–41 °C, Calone is a solid at room temperature but can soften at slightly elevated temperature (e.g. body temperature or a warm climate). Warm gently before processing if necessary.

Safety information

According to the current safety data sheet (version 4.1, 30 Apr 2025), Calone is classified under CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 as: Skin Corr. 1B, H314 (causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage), Eye Dam. 1, H318 (causes serious eye damage), and STOT SE 3, H336 (may cause drowsiness or dizziness). Signal word: Danger.

This is a corrosive material with a serious safety profile. Direct contact with skin and eyes must be strictly avoided. Protective gloves, safety goggles or a face shield are mandatory when handling the undiluted material. In case of skin contact, immediately remove all contaminated clothing and thoroughly wash the affected area with water and soap; in case of eye contact, immediately rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, and in both cases seek medical advice or contact a poison control center immediately.

The material is not classified as a PBT or vPvB substance and, according to the safety data sheet, contains no components with known endocrine properties. For transport: UN 1759, Class 8 (corrosive), Packing Group II.
