Helvetolide® – Firmenich
Helvetolide belongs to the family of contemporary musk molecules that have replaced the animalic, often heavy character of classic musks with a light, fruity-powdery presence. Notably, it is produced through an upcycling process from a by-product of the paper industry.

Role in the formula
Helvetolide stands out for its unusual volatility for a musk molecule – its chemical structure gives formulas presence as early as the top note, while its effect, according to the manufacturer, remains perceptible from the first to the last impression. It fixes a composition without suppressing it, can gently shift floral notes, and rounds out fruity notes without leaving an artificial, "functional" aftertaste.
According to Firmenich, the origins of the company's musk research reach back to the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry – since then Firmenich has been regarded as one of the leading houses for musk materials. Helvetolide continues this tradition with a contemporary profile reminiscent of ambrette seed.
Use in perfumery
Helvetolide is suited to musky accords, fruity-floral compositions, and functional applications such as shower gel, shampoo and fabric softener, where manufacturer data reports stable substantivity. Official concentration figures from Firmenich vary widely by application – from traces in functional products to higher proportions in fine fragrance, where it runs through all three scent phases (top, heart and base).
Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving: Soluble in ethanol and common perfumery solvents, practically insoluble in water.
Storing: Dry, unopened containers, optimal storage temperature 11–25 °C. Always keep in original packaging, away from oxidizing agents.
Combining: Proven in combination with floral and fruity notes, to which it lends volume and richness without altering their character.
Origin – upcycling from the paper industry
Helvetolide is not made from newly cultivated raw materials but is derived from turpentine – a by-product that arises when softwood (such as Pinus contorta) is processed into paperboard in the paper industry. Fractional distillation yields alpha- and beta-pinene, which serve as starting materials for the subsequent synthesis. According to Firmenich's Eco Ingredient Compass, Helvetolide contains over 50% renewable carbon – a figure that refers to the origin of the raw material and should be considered independently of the biodegradability of the finished molecule (see safety information).
Safety information
According to the current safety data sheet from Firmenich Grasse SAS (version 10.1, 19 Mar 2026), Helvetolide is classified under CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 as: Aquatic Chronic 2, H411 (toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects), pictogram GHS09. Not a PBT or vPvB substance, not assessed as an endocrine disruptor.
Toxicological data: oral and dermal LD50 (rat) each above 2,000 mg/kg (OECD 401/402). The Ames test for mutagenicity was negative. According to the safety data sheet, the substance is considered not readily biodegradable – independently of the high share of renewable carbon in the raw-material origin (see above). The flash point is 139 °C, the auto-ignition temperature 294 °C. For transport: UN 3082, Class 9, Packing Group III, classified as a marine pollutant. In Germany, water hazard class 2 applies.
