Role in the formula
Methyl Laitone is one of the spiro-lactones developed and patented by Givaudan itself. It lends white-flower notes such as jasmine, gardenia, tuberose and ylang-ylang cosmetic body, and fruit accords such as peach and osmanthus creamy fullness. It also lends sandalwood accords a milky note and blends well with coumarin and tonka.
An official example from Givaudan practice: 50% Methyl Laitone 10%/DPG combined with 50% Nectaryl yields a peach-cheesecake accord.
Use in perfumery
The official usage range is traces to 2%. Methyl Laitone is suited to white-flower accords, fruit compositions and milky-sandalwood base structures. On the blotter it remains perceptible for about a week according to the manufacturer.
Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining
Dissolving: Supplied as a 10% solution in dipropylene glycol (DPG), and therefore readily miscible with common perfumery solvents.
Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated, preferably in full, hermetically sealed containers. Protect from light.
Combining: Proven with Nectaryl for a peach-cheesecake accord. It also blends well with coumarin, tonka and white-flower and sandalwood materials.
Safety information
Methyl Laitone 10%/DPG is not classified as a hazardous mixture under CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 – no signal word, no hazard pictograms. It contains no components considered PBT or vPvB substances, and no components with endocrine-disrupting properties under REACH.
The flash point is 125 °C. In Germany, water hazard class 2 applies. Usual precautions for handling concentrated aroma materials apply as always.
