Vanillin Propylene Glycol Acetal N°830 – Bedoukian
Vanillin Propylene Glycol Acetal (BRI N°830) is the US specialist Bedoukian's answer to an old problem in perfumery: vanillin discolours – especially in alkaline and functional bases. In the acetal, the phenolic aldehyde that causes this browning is masked as a propylene glycol acetal. The result: a rich, sweet vanilla note with powdery and cocoa facets which, according to the manufacturer, is "stable in an alkali environment with little discoloration".
Odour Profile
- "A rich, vanilla, sweet aroma with powdery, cocoa notes." (official manufacturer description)
- Odour family: gourmand / vanilla
- Base note
- Tenacity on blotter: more than 2 weeks
- Slightly yellowish, viscous liquid
Role in the Formula
Vanillin PG Acetal is a vanillin derivative for the base note: it brings the familiar vanilla character without vanillin's typical weakness of discoloration. According to Bedoukian, it can "extend … while reducing discoloration, or extending the time until the product discolors" – in other words, extend vanillin while reducing or delaying discoloration. This makes it suitable wherever vanillin causes colour problems: in light-coloured products, functional bases and alkaline media.
It fits seamlessly into the gourmand range of our shop: Isobutavan (Givaudan) provides the creamy vanilla facet, Chocovan AB 7244C (Givaudan) the chocolate-vanilla base – Vanillin PG Acetal contributes the stable, powdery-cocoa vanilla component with more than two weeks of tenacity on the blotter.
Use in Perfumery
- Recommended use level according to the manufacturer: 1.00–5.00% in the formula
- Fine fragrance: base note for gourmand, vanilla and amber compositions
- Functional applications (manufacturer's data): fabric softener, antiperspirant, dishwashing liquid, shampoo, liquid detergent
- Soy wax candles: explicitly named by the manufacturer (burn performance)
- IFRA: Bedoukian certifies compliance with IFRA Amendment 51; no IFRA Standard exists for CAS 68527-74-2 – no restriction
Practical Note: Dissolving, Storing, Combining
Dissolving: Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol (manufacturer's data). As a viscous liquid it is easy to pre-dilute in ethanol and weigh in.
Storing: Cool, dry, protected from light and tightly closed.
Combining: Its role as a vanillin partner is documented by the manufacturer: it extends vanillin and delays its discoloration. In our shop, Isobutavan and Chocovan AB 7244C are natural gourmand partners.

FAQ
What is Vanillin PG Acetal?
A vanillin derivative from Bedoukian (BRI N°830): the phenolic aldehyde of vanillin is masked as a propylene glycol acetal. It smells rich, sweet and vanillic with powdery cocoa notes – yet remains stable in alkaline media and hardly discolours.
How does it differ from vanillin?
Vanillin turns brown in many bases. According to the manufacturer, the acetal is "stable in an alkali environment with little discoloration" and can extend vanillin, reduce discoloration or delay the point at which discoloration occurs.
How do I dose Vanillin PG Acetal?
Bedoukian recommends 1.00–5.00% in the formula. As a base note with more than two weeks of tenacity on the blotter, it carries a long way into the drydown.
Is Vanillin PG Acetal hazardous or IFRA-restricted?
According to the manufacturer it is not classified as hazardous – no CLP label elements are required. No IFRA Standard exists for CAS 68527-74-2; Bedoukian certifies compliance with IFRA Amendment 51.
Is the material nature-identical?
No, Vanillin PG Acetal is not nature-identical.
Hazard Statements (CLP Labelling)
Not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP): according to the manufacturer (Bedoukian), no label elements are required for this substance. No pictogram, signal word or H statements.
This information refers to the undiluted raw material. Classification according to the manufacturer's data (Bedoukian); the label on the container is authoritative.
