Ambrocenide® Cryst. – Symrise
Ambrocenide® is a woody-amber booster from Symrise's cedarwood chemistry – not an Ambroxan, but an acetal with a chemistry of its own. Its odor threshold is 0.0013 µg/l of air: even traces audibly change a formula. Symrise supplies the pure substance as pale-white to white crystals with a GC purity of at least 99%.
Odor Profile
- Official descriptors: “Ambery, Wood, Amber” – ambery-woody, dry, assertive
- “Powerful and long-lasting top to base booster” – per the manufacturer, a strong, long-lasting amplifier from top to base note
- Lends power to woody and amber accords and volume to floral heart notes
- According to Symrise, makes musk notes perceptible as early as the top note
Role in the Formula
Ambrocenide is not a classic base material but an amplifier: it lifts woody-amber structures, floral heart notes and musk across the whole evolution of a fragrance. Symrise gives a use range from traces to 2%, the patent typical amounts of 0.05–2 wt%. For the intense woody-amber style of many niche and designer fragrances, it is the right power component.
On the amber shelf it complements the Ambroxan family – such as Ambroxide Cryst. from the same house or Ambrofix™ (Givaudan) – but chemically it is something else: an acetal from α-cedrene. Its synergy with musk notes, which it pushes forward, is documented.
Use in Perfumery
- Fine fragrance: traces to 2% (crystals) in the concentrate
- Tested by Symrise in eau de toilette (4.0% fragrance oil) as well as soap, deodorant, shampoo, fabric softener and detergent
- Olfactorily stable, including in chlorine-containing media
- Besides the crystals (no. 600199), Symrise offers a 10% solution in DPG (no. 100215) – with this material, dilution is the norm
Practical Notes: Dissolving, Storage, Pairing
Dissolving: Always work from a pre-dilution; 1% or 10% in DPG or ethanol is common. Undiluted, the trace range cannot be weighed sensibly.
Storage: Cool, dry, protected from light and tightly closed. The material contains no stabiliser.
Pairing: Per the manufacturer: woody and amber accords (power), floral heart notes (volume) and musk (lift into the top note).
From Cedarwood Chemistry
According to the Symrise patent, Ambrocenide is made from α-cedrene, a sesquiterpene of cedarwood oil: via cedrene epoxide and cedrane diols, acetalisation with dimethoxypropane yields the finished molecule. Stereochemistry is decisive – the (4aR,5R,7aS,9R) stereoisomer smells considerably stronger than the other diastereomers, hence the low use levels. The renewable carbon share is 83.3%. Ambrocenide® is a registered trademark of Symrise AG, Holzminden.
Safety Information
According to the ECHA C&L Inventory, Ambrocenide is classified with GHS07 and the signal word “Warning”: H315 (causes skin irritation) and H319 (causes serious eye irritation). Wear protective gloves and safety glasses when handling the crystals. No IFRA Standard exists.

FAQ
What is Ambrocenide?
A very strong woody-amber booster by Symrise (CAS 211299-54-6) that amplifies ambery, woody, floral and musk notes across the whole fragrance evolution.
Is Ambrocenide the same as Ambroxan?
No. Despite the similar name it is a different molecule: an acetal from α-cedrene. Both serve the amber theme but differ completely in chemistry and strength.
How do I dose Ambrocenide?
In traces up to at most 2% (crystals), always from a pre-dilution of 1% or 10% in DPG.
Why is Ambrocenide so strong?
According to the Symrise patent, the (4aR,5R,7aS,9R) stereoisomer produced smells considerably stronger than the other diastereomers.
Is Ambrocenide hazardous or IFRA-restricted?
It is classified as a skin and eye irritant (H315, H319) – use gloves and safety glasses. No IFRA Standard exists.
