Fixateur 505 E – dsm-firmenich
Fixateur 505 E (catalogue code 000505 E) is not a single molecule but a compounded base – "an iconic dsm-firmenich base compounded around AMBROX®" (manufacturer's description). In the manufacturer's catalogue it is listed under AMBERY / ACCORDS.
Odour Profile
- "A very powerful odor of ambergris with a slightly woody-dry character" (official manufacturer description)
- Official descriptors: Ambery, Woody, Animalic
- Core building block according to the manufacturer: a reaction mass of two Ambrox-type diastereomers (15–20%)
- Liquid
Role in the Formula
As a base, Fixateur 505 E does what its name promises: it fixes and carries a composition with a ready-balanced amber accord. According to the manufacturer, the base consists of three components: a rosin methyl ester as carrier resin (20–30%), the Ambrox-type diastereomer reaction mass as the amber core (15–20%) and alpha-iso-methylionone as a fine violet nuance (0.1–0.5%). If you prefer the pure molecule to the finished accord, you will find the Ambroxan grades Ambrofix® and AmberMor® in our shop – Fixateur 505 E places the same amber core in a compounded, resinous-animalic context.
Use in Perfumery
The manufacturer does not publish dosage guidelines for this base. In practice it is used like an amber fixative in the base note: start with small amounts and follow the effect on blotter and skin over several days, as amber materials only fully show their strength in the drydown.
Practical Note: Dissolving, Storing, Combining
Dissolving: Liquid and ready to use; for formula work a 10% dilution in ethanol or DPG is practical.
Storing: Keep cool, dry, protected from light and tightly closed.
Combining: Its core building block AMBROX® is documented – the base therefore naturally harmonises with amber-oriented formulas and can be further boosted or refreshed with pure Ambroxan grades such as Ambrofix®.
Composition According to the Manufacturer
According to the manufacturer (dsm-firmenich), Fixateur 505 E is a mixture of three main components:
- Rosin methyl ester (Resin acids and Rosin acids, hydrogenated, Me esters) – CAS 8050-15-5, EC No. 232-476-2, REACH No. 01-2119969275-26, 20–30%, classified as Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412)
- Reaction mass of two Ambrox-type diastereomers (tetramethyldodecahydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan isomers) – REACH No. 01-2120094518-45 (no CAS/EC number published), 15–20%, classified as Repr. 2 (H361) and Aquatic Chronic 2 (H411)
- Alpha-iso-methylionone – CAS 127-51-5, EC No. 204-846-3, 0.1–0.5%, classified as Skin Sens. 1B (H317) and Aquatic Chronic 2 (H411)
Historical product sheets from the manufacturer list the base in 2018 as "BASE FIXATEUR 000505 E" and in 2020 as "000505 E FIXATEUR". In its sustainability profile the manufacturer names the programme "Upcycling".
Safety Information
According to the manufacturer (dsm-firmenich), Fixateur 505 E is classified as a mixture with pictogram GHS08 and signal word "Warning": H361 (suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child) and H412 (harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). The manufacturer additionally refers to EUH208 (contains alpha-iso-methylionone, CAS 127-51-5, EC No. 204-846-3, may produce an allergic reaction). The H361 classification comes from one formula component – the reaction mass of two Ambrox-type diastereomers (tetramethyldodecahydronaphtho[2,1-b]furan isomers, the amber core of the base, 15–20%) – which is itself classified as Repr. 2.

FAQ
What is Fixateur 505 E?
An iconic amber base from dsm-firmenich compounded around AMBROX®: a very powerful ambergris scent with a slightly woody-dry, animalic character.
Is Fixateur 505 E a single molecule?
No. It is a fragrance accord – a mixture of three components according to the manufacturer: rosin methyl ester (CAS 8050-15-5), an Ambrox-type diastereomer reaction mass and alpha-iso-methylionone (CAS 127-51-5). As it is a mixture, there is no single CAS number for the product as a whole.
How does it differ from Ambroxan products such as Ambrofix or AmberMor?
Ambrofix® and AmberMor® are the pure molecule; Fixateur 505 E delivers a ready-composed amber accord around the same core, with a woody-animalic setting.
How is the base classified?
According to the manufacturer, as a mixture with GHS08 and the signal word "Warning": H361 and H412, plus EUH208 (contains alpha-iso-methylionone). The label on the container is authoritative.
