Paradisamide™ – Givaudan

Paradisamide brings a long-lasting, fresh tropical fruit note of guava and passion fruit, with nuances of grapefruit, rhubarb and cassis, into a formula – a juicy-zesty accent that lasts considerably longer than classic citrus and tropical-fruit materials.

Odor character

• Fruity, tropical: guava, passion fruit, grapefruit, rhubarb, cassis (official sensory profile)
• Juicy, zesty – lends red-fruit notes a sparkling accent according to the manufacturer
• Colorless to very slightly yellowish, liquid – may crystallize
• Exceptionally long-lasting: 10 days tenacity on the blotter
• Very low odor threshold of 1.2301 ng/L – even tiny amounts are clearly perceptible

Role in the formula

According to the manufacturer, Paradisamide can be overdosed up to 20% in tropical fruit accords to achieve an intense, exotic effect – or dosed lower to give other fruity notes a juicy-tropical twist. It is frequently used to create bloom in shampoo and shower gel: in Givaudan's stability table, the material shows very good values across almost all tested pH ranges – from fabric softener and antiperspirant to shampoo, soap and washing powder.

A synergy officially documented by Givaudan combines 20% Paradisamide with 80% Methyl Laitone 10%/TEC (also available in our range) into an intense, exotic fruit accord.

Use in perfumery

Paradisamide is suited to tropical fruit accords, fresh citrus compositions and the extension of red-fruit notes. The manufacturer states a usage range of up to 15%.

Practical note: dissolving, storing, combining

Dissolving: Very poorly water-soluble (909 mg/L at 20 °C), with a Log Pow of 3.2–3.5 readily soluble in fatty and alcoholic carriers.

Storing: Store at 10–30 °C, dry and well-ventilated, preferably in full, hermetically sealed containers. Protect from light. If needed, warm gently (max. 40 °C) and mix well before use, as the material may crystallize.

Combining: Proven in combination with Methyl Laitone for tropical fruit accords (see official synergy above).

Safety information

According to the current safety data sheet from Givaudan (version 9.0, 2 Aug 2024), Paradisamide is classified under CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 as: Acute Tox. 4, H302 (harmful if swallowed), Acute Tox. 4, H332 (harmful if inhaled), Skin Irrit. 2, H315 (causes skin irritation), Eye Irrit. 2, H319 (causes serious eye irritation), Skin Sens. 1B, H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction), STOT SE 2, H371 (may cause damage to organs – central nervous system – if swallowed or inhaled), STOT RE 2, H373 (may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, if swallowed), and Aquatic Chronic 2, H411 (toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). Persons prone to skin sensitization, asthma, allergies or chronic respiratory diseases should not work with this material.

Toxicological data: oral LD50 (rat) 500 mg/kg (OECD 423), dermal LD50 (rat) above 2,000 mg/kg (OECD 402). In the LLNA sensitization test on the mouse, the material was classified as a skin sensitizer of sub-category 1B; a human HRIPT test at a lower concentration (6.5% in ethanol/diethyl phthalate), by contrast, showed no sensitization – both results are documented in the safety data sheet. The Ames test for mutagenicity was negative (Salmonella and E. coli).

According to Givaudan's own sustainability profile, the material is considered not biodegradable and ecotoxicologically classified as "toxic." The flash point is 135 °C, the auto-ignition temperature 400 °C. For transport: UN 3082, Class 9, Packing Group III, classified as a marine pollutant. In Germany, water hazard class 2 applies. Protective gloves, safety goggles and adequate ventilation are recommended; contact with skin and eyes is to be avoided.
