Timbersilk™ – IFF

Timbersilk™ is the sister material of the famous ISO E Super from the same house, IFF. Both share the same molecular formula and a similar sustainability profile; they differ in their isomer distribution and therefore in nuance. Timbersilk delivers a warm, woody-amber signature with more than 48 hours of longevity on the blotter – powerful and at the same time silky soft. Our material is the tocopherol-stabilized quality (TOCO grade).

Odor Profile

  • "Smooth, warm, woody, amber note. Powerful yet silky soft." (official manufacturer description)
  • "Used to impart fullness and subtle strength to fragrances." (official manufacturer description)
  • Odor family: Woody
  • According to IFF, it performs evenly across top, heart and base note (note impact "Medium" in each)
  • Blotter longevity: more than 48 hours (substantivity >48 h)

Role in the Formula

Chemically, Timbersilk is a ketone (main isomer: 1-(2,3,8,8-tetramethyl-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydronaphthalen-2-yl)ethanone). According to the manufacturer's data (IFF, product code H20085), Timbersilk TOCO is registered at 90–100% under CAS 68155-66-8 / EC 915-730-3 – the gamma isomer. On the sister material: IFF describes ISO E Super as "richer in the desirable gamma isomer than is isocyclemone" – rich in the desirable gamma isomer that shapes the "velvety" effect. Molecular formula, molecular weight and field of use of both materials are practically identical.

In the formula, Timbersilk works as a woody-amber foundation: it fills the fragrance progression from top to base note and adds volume and diffusion without dominating the composition. IFF names up to 10% as the typical usage range.

Use in Perfumery

  • Fine fragrance: stability per IFF "Excellent/Very Good" – the core field of use, typically up to 10% in the formula
  • Liquid detergent and shampoo: "Very Good"
  • Fabric softener: "Very Good/Good"
  • Powder detergent and antiperspirant/deodorant: moderate
  • Bleach-containing products: poorly suited
  • IFRA note: the substance is subject to the IFRA Standard for OTNE (Restriction, 49th Amendment); maximum level in Category 4 (fine fragrance): 20 % – the maximum levels per product category in the current IFRA Standard are authoritative

Practical Notes: Dissolving, Storing, Combining

Dissolving: Practically insoluble in water (2.68 mg/L at 20 °C); for perfumery, pre-dilute in ethanol or common carriers as usual and weigh in.

Storing: Store cool, dry, protected from light and tightly sealed. The supplied quality is stabilized with tocopherol (TOCO grade).

Combining: Timbersilk is made to give compositions fullness and subtle strength (manufacturer statement) – it carries other materials rather than covering them. Anyone who wants to hear the difference between the two siblings should compare it directly with ISO E Super on the blotter.

Origin and Sustainability

Timbersilk comes from International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF), one of the major houses of the fragrance industry. According to IFF's sustainability profile, the material consists of 75% renewable carbon, is "natural derived", an upcycled product and suitable for vegan formulations. According to the manufacturer's data, it is very toxic to aquatic life – so do not pour residues down the drain.

More about the relationship between Timbersilk and ISO E Super can be found on our encyclopedia page Timbersilk™ – the quiet sibling of ISO E Super.

Safety Information

According to the manufacturer's data (IFF), Timbersilk TOCO is classified with GHS07 and GHS09 and the signal word "Warning": H315 (causes skin irritation), H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction) and H410 (very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects; M-factor chronic = 1).

IFRA: Restriction Standard for OTNE (49th Amendment; CAS 68155-66-8 is listed in its scope; restriction due to dermal sensitization and systemic toxicity); maximum level in Category 4 (fine fragrance): 20 %; the current IFRA Standard is authoritative.

FAQ

What is Timbersilk?
Timbersilk™ is a woody-amber material by IFF – a smooth, warm note that is powerful yet silky soft and gives compositions fullness and subtle strength (manufacturer description).

How does Timbersilk differ from ISO E Super?
Both come from IFF and share the same molecular formula. According to the manufacturer's data, Timbersilk TOCO (product code H20085) is registered at 90–100% under CAS 68155-66-8 (gamma isomer). IFF describes ISO E Super as rich in the gamma isomer that shapes the "velvet" effect. The two materials are closely related, with a very similar property profile but a nuance of their own.

How should I dose Timbersilk?
IFF names a typical usage range of up to 10% in the formula. For the finished product, the maximum levels of the IFRA Standard also apply.

Is Timbersilk IFRA-restricted?
Yes. The substance is subject to the IFRA Restriction Standard for OTNE (49th Amendment) due to dermal sensitization and systemic toxicity; maximum level in Category 4 (fine fragrance): 20 % in the finished product. The current IFRA Standard is authoritative.

Is Timbersilk hazardous to the environment?
Yes, according to the manufacturer's data it is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects (H410). Do not pour residues down the drain.
