Globalide® – Symrise
Globalide is Symrise's macrocyclic musk lactone: an oxacyclohexadecenone (isomer mixture) with a transparent, powdery-fruity musk character and a dry woody facet. It belongs to the same family of unsaturated 16-membered macrolactones as Habanolide (Firmenich) – Globalide is Symrise's version of this molecule type, supplied as an isomer mixture. At 97.0% it is readily biodegradable.
Odor Profile
- "Musky, Transparent, Powdery, Fruity, Dry Woody" (official Symrise descriptors)
- A transparent, "clean" musk – not an animalic, heavy type
- Fruity connotations that underline floral compositions
- Long-lasting (manufacturer statement)
- Material form: clear, colorless to slightly yellowish liquid
Role in the Formula
Globalide is a base-note musk with an unusually wide dosage latitude: Symrise states 0.5–20%. At low dosage it lends formulas powdery transparency and substantivity; at high dosage it becomes a load-bearing musk base that makes compositions soft and long-lasting without weighing them down. The manufacturer explicitly recommends it for combinations with clean, dry woody notes and to underline transparent floral compositions with fruity nuances; synergy with macrocyclic musk ketones is also documented.
In the shop's musk lineup, it sits between Velvione® (Givaudan) and Silvanone® Supra (Givaudan) as macrocyclic relatives, and Helvetolide® (Firmenich) as a fruity-powdery representative of a different musk class. The closest relative is Habanolide® (Firmenich/dsm-firmenich) – same macrolactone family, supplied by Globalide as an isomer mixture.
Use in Perfumery
- Fine fragrance: dosage latitude 0.5–20% in the concentrate
- Application-tested by Symrise: eau de toilette 4.0%, soap 1.2%, deodorant 1.0%, shampoo/shower gel 0.5%, body lotion 0.3%, fabric softener 0.6%, laundry detergent 0.3–0.5%, rim block 8.0%
- Stability documented over 3 months at 40 °C
- Per the manufacturer, ideal for clean, dry woody combinations and transparent florals
Practical Notes: Dissolving, Storing, Combining
Dissolving: Globalide is liquid and can be weighed in directly; for fine work at the lower dosage range, a pre-dilution in ethanol or DPG is recommended.
Storing: Store cool, dry, protected from light and tightly sealed. The material contains no stabilizer.
Combining: Confirmed partners per the manufacturer: clean, dry woody notes; transparent floral compositions with a fruity tone; synergistic with macrocyclic musk ketones such as Velvione®.
Macrolactones: the Modern Musk Family
Macrocyclic musk compounds are the class of modern musk molecules structurally closest to the natural musk odorants. Globalide is an unsaturated 16-membered macrolactone (oxacyclohexadecen-2-one) produced as an isomer mixture with ≥ 90% GC purity (sum of isomers). PubChem lists "Habanolide" – the Firmenich name – as a synonym of the (12E)-oxacyclohexadecen-2-one; Globalide is Symrise's version of this lactone type. Globalide® is a registered trademark of Symrise AG, Holzminden, formed in 2003 from Haarmann & Reimer and Dragoco. At 97.0% biodegradability, it is among the most readily biodegradable musk building blocks in the range.
Safety Information
Per the notifications mirrored in the ECHA C&L Inventory, Globalide is classified with GHS09 and the signal word "Warning" as hazardous to the aquatic environment: H400 (very toxic to aquatic life) and H410 (very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects). Classification per the ECHA C&L Inventory; the label on the container is authoritative. In practice this means: never pour residues or rinse water down the drain, and avoid release to the environment. At the same time, the material is readily biodegradable at 97.0%. No IFRA standard exists for Globalide, meaning no IFRA usage restriction.

FAQ
What is Globalide?
A macrocyclic musk lactone from Symrise (oxacyclohexadecen-2-one, isomer mixture) with a transparent, powdery-fruity musk character and a dry woody facet.
What's the difference from Habanolide?
Both belong to the same family of unsaturated 16-membered macrolactones; PubChem lists "Habanolide" (Firmenich) as a synonym of the (12E) isomer. Globalide is Symrise's version, supplied as an isomer mixture (≥ 90% sum of isomers).
How do I dose Globalide?
Symrise states a very wide latitude of 0.5–20% – from a subtle powdery effect to a load-bearing musk base. Overdosing risk within the usual range is low.
Is Globalide biodegradable?
Yes, at 97.0% it is considered readily biodegradable. At the same time, per ECHA C&L notifications it is classified as hazardous to the aquatic environment (H400/H410) – so never pour residues down the drain.
Is there an IFRA restriction?
No, there is no IFRA standard for Globalide.
Hazard Statements (CLP Labeling)

Signal word: Warning
H410 – Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
EUH208 – Contains Pentadecan-15-olide. May produce an allergic reaction.
