Musk Molecules Compared
“Musk” sounds like a single note – yet behind it stands a whole family of very different molecules. One smells of fresh laundry, the next of warm skin, the third of powdery cashmere. Knowing which group a molecule belongs to lets you dose and combine far more deliberately. This page places the musks from our range in context – with origin, character, data and their role in well-known fragrances.
From real musk to synthetic
The note’s origin is an animal: the musk deer, whose glandular secretion – above all the famous Tonkin musk from the border region of northern Vietnam and southern China – was for centuries considered the warmest and most tenacious fixative in perfumery. Its depth came from macrocyclic molecules, chief among them muscone.
In 1979, CITES placed the trade in musk-deer products under protection – the legal end of natural musk in perfumery. What followed was one of the largest substitution movements in fragrance history: chemists reproduced the effect of natural musk with synthetic molecules. Today fine perfumery works almost exclusively with synthetic musk – divided into four families.
The four families
- Nitro musks – the oldest group, practically gone today for safety and environmental reasons.
- Polycyclic musk – e.g. Galaxolide. Clean, soapy, round; the “laundry white”.
- Macrocyclic musk – e.g. Velvione, Ambrettolide, Silvanone Supra. Chemically closest to natural musk: warm, skin-like, elegant – and usually more biodegradable.
- Alicyclic musk – e.g. Helvetolide. Tonally between the two: white, creamy, with fruit.

Galaxolide (polycyclic)
Introduced by IFF in the mid-1960s and still one of the most widely used musks in the world. Galaxolide (HHCB) is the epitome of the clean, soapy “clean-laundry” musk – round, slightly sweet, unobtrusive. It became famous for its generous dosage in Trésor de Lancôme (1990), Sophia Grojsman’s signature scent. More in our story Trésor & the Galaxolide gamble.
Helvetolide® (alicyclic)
Firmenich’s first alicyclic musk, in the early 1990s – and a turning point: white and creamy-milky, with a soft pear fruitiness that no classic musk brings. Helvetolide is considered partly biodegradable and carries over 50% renewable carbon. Background in Helvetolide & the Staatsmijnen and in the Helvetolide reference.
Velvione (macrocyclic)
A macrocyclic musk by Givaudan whose name was formed from “velvet” and “ketone” – and that is exactly how it smells: velvety, powdery, cashmere-soft, with a warmth that recalls the old nitro-musk effects. In traces it lifts white florals such as jasmine, ylang and gardenia and gives floral bases volume. Details in the Velvione reference.
Ambrettolide (macrocyclic)
A macrocyclic lactone that occurs naturally in the seed of the ambrette mallow (Hibiscus abelmoschus) – hence the elegant, slightly fruity-floral, almost wine-like character. Sylvaine Delacourte calls it the “champagne of raw materials”. It is regulatory-clean: no quantitative IFRA restriction, low aquatic toxicity, REACH-compliant without SVHC. Silvanone Supra (macrocyclic)
A soft, powdery macrocyclic musk by Givaudan with a quirk: its character shifts noticeably with dosage – sometimes discreet and skin-close, sometimes distinctly more present. Details in the Silvanone Supra reference.
Cashmeran (special case – “radiant musk”)
Not a classic white musk but a texture of its own: spicy, woody, ambery and velvety at once. Introduced by IFF in the 1970s, Cashmeran is often called a “radiant musk” because it gives a composition less a pure musk note than a glowing, warm aura. It is powerful – small amounts go a long way.

How to choose?
- Clean, fresh, “laundered” – Galaxolide or Helvetolide.
- Warm, skin-like, sensual – the macrocyclics: Velvione for velvet, Ambrettolide for elegance.
- Creamy-fruity with a sustainability bonus – Helvetolide.
- Spicy-woody radiance rather than “just musk” – Cashmeran.
- Nature-identical and regulatory-clean – Ambrettolide.
In practice, perfumers almost always combine several musks. There is a physiological reason: many people are partly anosmic to individual musk molecules – they barely perceive them, while others smell them clearly. A blend of two or three types makes sure the base is “there” for as many noses as possible – and rounds it out tonally.
A word on environment and regulation
The polycyclic musks like Galaxolide have been under closer observation for some time: they degrade only slowly and can accumulate in waterways; IFRA has recently limited their use in leave-on products (Cat. 4: 1.5%). They are not banned – but the industry is noticeably shifting weight toward the macrocyclic and alicyclic musks, considered more readily biodegradable. Helvetolide and Ambrettolide represent that direction.
